FCC Chairwoman Announces Future of Television Initiative

Public-Private Partnership to Ensure Smooth Transition to ATSC 3.0

Las Vegas, Nev. -- Today the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) launched the Future of Television Initiative, as announced by Federal Communications (FCC) Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. The Future of Television Initiative is a public-private partnership to ensure a smooth transition to ATSC 3.0 for broadcasters, other associated industries and, most importantly, the American public. NAB will establish and lead this effort with industry, government and public interest stakeholders to establish a comprehensive roadmap for an orderly and expeditious transition to this exciting new viewer experience.

“With over 60 percent of Americans already in range of a Next Gen TV signal, we are excited to work closely with all stakeholders, including the FCC, to bring Next Gen TV and all of its benefits to all viewers,” said NAB CEO Curtis LeGeyt. “We commend the Chairwoman, her staff and the Media Bureau for the hard work they have put into making this collaborative effort a reality. NAB and broadcasters will continue to work tirelessly to pave the way for this exciting new technology, which will revolutionize the way viewers consume broadcast content and enable local stations to better serve their communities.”

The Future of Television Initiative will incorporate three working groups, each designed to address critical components of the transition. These efforts will focus on addressing existing hardware, the technical aspects of executing the transition, and other regulatory issues implicated by the evolution in broadcasting standards. The working groups will be formed in the coming weeks and will involve a diverse array of stakeholders.
