Statement from NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith on Death of Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The following statement can be attributed to NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith regarding the death of Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI):

"We mourn the passing of a statesman, a decorated war hero, and a legend in the U.S. Senate. I had the pleasure of working with Sen. Inouye on the Senate Commerce Committee on many pieces of legislation, and I can honestly say there was no finer gentleman in politics. Broadcasters have lost a friend, and our country has lost a man of bipartisan decency and integrity."

Note to reporters who cover the broadcast TV industry: Sen. Inouye has been at the center of much of the communications policy debate in Washington for the last three decades. He was the author of the retransmission consent provision in the 1992 Cable Act that allowed local television stations to bargain for fair compensation from pay-TV providers who retransmit local TV signals.
