WASHINGTON, DC -- The NAB Show, the annual conference and expo for professionals who create, manage and distribute entertainment across all platforms, announced today that the creators of "How to Train Your Dragon" from DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. will give an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the new 3D animated film at this year's NAB Show.
"'How to Train Your Dragon' - A Case Study" is set for Monday, April 12. The 2010 NAB Show will take place April 10-15 in Las Vegas.
In this comprehensive and revealing session, several of the filmmakers behind "How to Train Your Dragon" will detail how story, 3D imagery and sound were brought together to create the film that has since become the best-reviewed movie of the year. Members of the panel will include the following DreamWorks Animation filmmakers: writer-director Dean DeBlois; Academy Award-winning sound designer and mixer Randy Thom; production designer Kathy Altieri and head of layout Gil Zimmerman.
"3D filmmaking - and specifically 3D animation - are hugely relevant topics for NAB Show attendees this year," said Chris Brown, executive vice president, conventions & business operations for the NAB Show. "It will be fantastic to have some of the key players behind the artistry of 'How to Train Your Dragon' on our stage to present a case study for this wonderful and innovative adventure."
DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" stars the voice talents of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, TJ Miller and Kristen Wiig.
Dean DeBlois is a director, screenwriter and animator who is equally well-versed in both live-action and animated filmmaking. DeBlois is known for co-writing and co-directing Walt Disney Animation Studios' international hit "Lilo and Stitch." He also served as director on critically acclaimed indie film "Heima" as well as head of story on the Disney sensation "Mulan."
Randy Thom is a nine-time Academy Award nominee (and two-time winner) and serves as director of sound design for Lucasfilm. Thom has worked on countless blockbuster classics, including the "Star Wars" films, "Forrest Gump" and "The Incredibles," to name only a few. Prior to joining Lucasfilm, Thom was a production director at KPFA-FM in Berkeley, CA where he was in charge of recording and mixing for the renowned station, before moving on to work on "Apocalypse Now" for American Zoetrope, a film notable for its widely acknowledged sound design. Thom also served as the voice of Wall-e in the 2008 Oscar winning film.
Kathy Altieri served as production designer for "How to Train Your Dragon." Prior to her work on this film, Altieri was production designer on "Over the Hedge" and "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." When arriving at DreamWorks Animation in 1994, Altieri worked as an art director on "The Prince of Egypt." She was the first artist hired when DreamWorks Animation was formed.
Gil Zimmerman joined DreamWorks Animation in 2002. Prior credits at the studio include "Over the Hedge" and the Oscar-nominated "Shark Tale." Zimmerman's previous production credits also include a list of titles, among them the Oscar-nominated "Bolt," "Demonslayer," "Treasure Planet" and "Tarzan." Zimmerman is currently working on the upcoming DreamWorks Animation feature "Puss in Boots," slated for release on November 4, 2011.
