WASHINGTON,
DC -- Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) and eight new House members recently
added their support for a bipartisan, bicameral effort denouncing "any
new performance fee, tax, royalty or other charge" on local radio
stations for music airplay. Burr becomes the ninth Senator to co-sponsor
the Local Radio Freedom Act (S.
Con. Res 82). Meanwhile, a House companion resolution, H.
Con. Res. 244, has gained the support of eight additionally lawmakers,
including Reps. John Olver (D-MA), Luis Fortuno (R-PR), Shelley Berkley
(D-NV), Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Kenny Marchant (R-TX), Dave Weldon
(R-FL), Harry Mitchell (D-AZ), and Baron Hill (D-IN). Support for the
House resolution now stands at 208 lawmakers.
"Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station for broadcasting sound recordings over the air, or on any business for such public performance of sound recordings," reads the Local Radio Freedom Act.
The Local Radio Freedom Act counters legislation supported by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which would require America's hometown broadcasters to compensate the foreign-owned record labels for radio airplay of music.
To date, nine Senators have co-sponsored S. Con. Res. 82, including:
