Fifteen More Lawmakers Now Oppose Performance Tax

--House Opposition Climbs to 232; Senate Opposition Reaches 16 Members--

WASHINGTON, DC -- Twelve more House members and three additional Senators oppose a record industry-backed efforts to levy a performance tax on local radio stations for music aired free to listeners. Currently, a bipartisan group of 232 House lawmakers and 16 U.S. Senators have signed on as co-sponsors to the Local Radio Freedom Act, a resolution opposing the imposition of "any new performance fee, tax, royalty or other charge" on radio for music airplay.

Adding their support to the Local Radio Freedom Act are Reps. Anh "Joseph" Cao (LA-2), Michael Castle (DE-AL), Bob Etheridge (NC-2), Bill Foster (IL-14), Marcy Kaptur (OH-9), Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15), Frank Kratovil (MD-1), Tom Latham (IA-4), Kendrick Meek (FL-17), Adam Putnam (FL-12), Dave Reichert (WA-8) and Dina Titus (NV-3). Sens. Max Baucus (MT), Mike Johanns (NE) and Pat Roberts (KS) have added their support to an identical resolution in the Senate.

The Local Radio Freedom Act, unveiled at a February Capitol Hill event hosted by the Free Radio Alliance, was introduced by Reps. Gene Green (TX-29) and Mike Conaway (TX-11). In March, an identical resolution was introduced in the Senate (S. Con. Res. 14) by Sens. Blanche Lincoln (AR) and John Barrasso (WY).

"Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station for broadcasting sound recordings over-the-air, or on any business for such public performance of sound recordings," reads The Local Radio Freedom Act.

Last week, NAB announced that the majority of U.S. House members now support the Local Radio Freedom Act. The bipartisan House resolution's 232 cosponsors are:
