We Are Showcasing New Ways to Create, Manage and Deliver Content

Nearly 93,000 attendees from around the globe gathered in Las Vegas, Nev., in April for the 2018 NAB Show, the world’s largest annual convention encompassing the convergence of media, entertainment and technology. Through an expansive exhibit floor showcasing market-ready startups, a live studio, hundreds of sessions and special events, the 2018 NAB Show provided the ultimate destination to explore next-gen opportunities.

Highlights included:

  • A fireside chat with Rep. Greg Walden (OR-02), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the presentation of the NAB Distinguished Service Award to Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America, and a keynote speech by Neal Mohan, chief product officer of YouTube.
  • The induction of “Wheel of Fortune” and “JEOPARDY!” into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame; Executive Producer Harry Friedman and hosts Pat Sajak, Vanna White and Alex Trebek accepted the honor.
  • Nationally-syndicated radio personality Elvis Duran was also inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
  • Television and film actress Kristen Bell received the NAB Television Chairman's Award.
  • Zach Braff, executive producer and director of ABC’s “Alex, Inc.,” Matt Tarses, executive producer and writer for “Alex, Inc.,” Donald Albright, producer of Tenderfoot TV’s "Up and Vanished," and Payne Lindsey, host of "Up and Vanished" and "Atlanta Monster” discussed the challenges and opportunities in audio-to-visual storytelling with CNN’s Sandra Gonzales.

In 2018, NAB launched Broadcast Education, an easy-to-navigate e-learning platform delivering the association’s educational and professional development offerings, including live and on-demand webcasts, podcasts, certificate courses and related materials.

Powered by NAB, the NAB Education Foundation, PILOT and NAB Show, Broadcast Education provides a single website to access all of NAB’s educational tools, free weekly podcasts and monthly webcasts, as well as specially-designed online courses on cyber awareness and cybersecurity for broadcasters.

We Are Developing the Next Generation of Broadcast Leaders

The NAB Education Foundation was created more than two decades ago with a mission to prepare broadcast leaders at every level of their careers and to advance the diversity efforts of the broadcasting industry. Making a direct impact on more than 1,000 people each year, the foundation offers a number of career development programs and initiatives to provide broadcast professionals with the tools and training to succeed in the ever-evolving media industry.

In its 18th year, the Broadcast Leadership Training program continued to support senior-level broadcast executives who aspire to advance in management positions, as well as increase the diversity profile of media broadcast ownership. In 2018, 17 executives graduated from the program, bringing the total number of broadcast professionals who have completed the program to 309.

NABEF quick facts:

  • Over 60 percent of Broadcast Leadership Training’s 309 graduates have been promoted one or more times since graduation.
  • 49 graduates of the Broadcast Leadership Training program have been or are currently station owners.
  • Since its inception 19 years ago, the Media Sales Institute has trained over 600 graduates.
  • In 2018 NABEF partnered with the Texas Association of Broadcasters to pilot the Media Sales Academy targeting college sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in media sales internships.
  • The Technology Apprenticeship Program is now in its eighth year of preparing recent college graduates for a career in broadcast technology and engineering.
  • NABEF partnered with NAB PILOT to launch the Technology Internship Grant program, which provides stations with funds to hire engineering and technology interns.

We Are Empowering Ingenuity

The 2018 event united go-getters in media, entertainment, finance and advertising to discover and champion new content strategies shaping modern media.

The Show welcomed nearly 15,000 attendees alongside more than 300 startup innovators and industry-respected leaders. Nearly 60 sessions took place on the exhibit floor covering new business models, trending technology and the latest creative inspirations. These sessions complemented several community-focused events to expand connections to the industry’s influencers.

Highlights include:

  • 67 new exhibitors, including ARRI, Bose, Google, Microsoft, and Primestream.
  • Keynote presentations by actor, producer and director Robert De Niro and ABC’s Martha Raddatz.
  • Television host Wendy Williams was honored with the 2018 NAB Show New York Impact Award.
  • “ABC World News Tonight” anchor David Muir was honored as the New York State Broadcasters Association's 2018 Broadcaster of the Year.
  • Culmination of the PILOT Pitch Prize, five early-stage startups competed on-stage during a live pitch to a panel of judges consisting of broadcasting and digital media leaders.
  • Addition of the Streaming Summit conference program, featuring fireside chats with AT&T Mobility and Entertainment, Cheddar, Comcast Cable, Facebook, fuboTV, Google, Hulu, Playmaker Media, Sling TV, Sony Interactive Entertainment and TotalPlay.

Radio Show

We Are Exploring and Celebrating the Best of Radio

Held in Orlando, Florida, the 2018 Radio Show brought together attendees from every sector of the radio business to learn new revenue-generating strategies and bold ideas to take their careers and their businesses to the next level, and to celebrate the very best of radio.

Among the highlights:

  • CBS News’ Major Garrett and Jill Schlesinger discussed politics, policies and the media.
  • NAB Advisor and former NAB Executive Vice President of Radio John David was honored with the 2018 National Radio Award at the Radio Luncheon.
  • The Advertiser Breakfast, hosted by Radio Advertising Bureau President and CEO Erica Farber, featured a discussion with futurist and Chief Growth Officer of Publicis Groupe Rishad Tobaccowala.
  • Multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson hosted and performed at the NAB Marconi Radio Awards & Dinner Show. Nick Fradiani, 2015 “American Idol” winner also performed, and 21 radio stations/personalities were recognized for overall excellence in radio as the 2018 Marconi Radio Award winners.
  • A discussion with two of radio’s leading CEOs Bob Pittman of iHeartMedia and David Field of Entercom moderated by Stephanie Ruhle, NBC News correspondent on how data and analytics are a game changer and what’s ahead for radio.
  • Wednesday Headliner – “Podcast Boom” featuring president of iHeartMedia Networks Group, Darren Davis; television and radio personality Mario Lopez; Executive Vice President of Marketing for Cumulus Media and President of Westwood One Suzanne Grimes; television personality Kaitlyn Bristowe; national radio and podcast host Elaina D. Smith and recording artist Jewel.
  • Plus, the Radio Show featured over 60 exhibits, 40 programming, sales/marketing, young professional and management breakout sessions, tech programs and live music on the Innovation Stage, the Podcast Studio and Bob & Tom's live broadcast.

Small Market Television Exchange

We Are Delivering $5 Million in ROI for Small Market Television Stations

The 2018 Small Market Television Exchange showcased exciting speakers, including Jim Doyle, TVB’s Brad Seitter and Steve Sturm, and the return of Chip Eichelberger who closed the event with his board break experience. SMTE provided new and innovative sales and marketing ideas during an action-packed two plus days. Breakout sessions delivered $3.8 million in revenue generating and money saving ideas. The Money Makers Competition delivered an additional $1.2 million in sales promotion ideas. This is a one-of-a-kind event that consistently delivers by providing sales management and revenue generation ideas for attendees to take back to their stations to implement right away.

Small Market Group Roundtable

The 2018 Small Market Group Roundtable brought together owners and operators of small market stations for discussion regarding the specific implications of legislation, policy and technology within their local markets. The agenda featured legislative and policy updates, as well as a special session with Facebook and CrowdTangle and presentations on the value of local television and conscious capitalism. The day ended with a presentation by a representative from the Google Global Partnerships Group. Through individual table topic discussions, the Roundtable also provided the unique opportunity for peers to share ideas and best practices. This year’s discussion topics included over-the-top television, media ownership rules, the spectrum C-band, the spectrum repack and Next Gen TV, among other subjects.
