1. Broadcasters Support Their Communities Through Hurricanes
Local broadcasters in the southeastern U.S. have been working around the clock to support their communities before, during and after Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Through power outages and dangerous conditions, they have worked relentlessly to provide trusted, real-time updates, driven by their commitment to keep the public safe and informed.
On the NAB Blog, you can read more about how broadcasters are working through the storms to bring their viewers and listeners the critical information they need.
On America's Stories, we've rounded up what local TV and radio stations have done to provide updates and resources after Hurricane Helene.
2. Broadcasters Take Over NYC
This week, over 12,000 attendees and 250 exhibitors from around the world came together at NAB Show New York.
Sessions at the show covered everything broadcasters need to know in today’s media landscape, including strategies to leverage technology for content and profit at the Radio + Podcast Interactive Forum. Journalists and media industry experts, including Sinclair’s Scott Ehrlich, Gray TV’s Lisa Allen, New York Times’ Lisa Lerer, Morgan Murphy Media’s Colin Benedict and Thomson Reuters’ Leah Millis, offered critical insights into maintaining audience trust, staying safe while covering political events and combatting misinformation at the Election Coverage Summit.
Highlights included the presentation of the NAB Distinguished Service Award to Bobby Bones and the National Radio Award to Dave Santrella at the Marconi Radio Awards.
📅 Save the date: we’ll see you back in New York the week of October 22-23, 2025.
The NAB Joint Board of Directors also held their October meeting during the Show. Pictured here is NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt addressing the meeting, which was held at iHeartMedia’s NYC office.

4. ICYMI: New We Are Broadcasters Spots Available
Your participation in NAB’s We are Broadcasters campaign has been integral to our efforts to educate Congress on local stations’ essential role through the We Are Broadcasters campaign.
What's happening: We’re asking for your help again by airing new TV and radio spots that spotlight how broadcasters provide the most trusted news during a time when misinformation runs rampant on social media, along with the music, talk and sports your audiences rely on every day.
Why it matters: We know this might be a challenging time to find available inventory, but we didn’t want to delay sharing these spots with you as we lay the groundwork for a new Congress and administration in 2025.
Get involved: Please download our new spots today and air them as often as possible, particularly during times when your members of Congress are in their district offices. We provide a congressional calendar to help you identify district work periods.
5. FCC Extends EAS Reporting Deadline
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has extended the deadline for all EAS participants to submit their ETRS Form One for calendar year 2024 in the Emergency Alert System (EAS) Test Reporting System (ETRS) from October 4 to October 18, 2024.
The FCC has taken this action to reduce burdens on EAS participants that are recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, although the deadline extension applies nationwide. More information can be found here.
6. “Martes de Acción” Supports Hispanic Voter Participation
NAB, in collaboration with members of the Hispanic Media GOTV Coalition, recently launched Martes de AcciĂłn (Tuesdays of Action), an initiative aimed at encouraging Hispanic voter participation and strengthening civic engagement ahead of the November elections.
What's happening: Every Tuesday through Election Day, NAB’s Hispanic Media GOTV Coalition members will intensify their outreach efforts across various
media platforms, including radio, television, digital media, social media, podcasts and live events.
🗳️ Dig deeper: This effort builds on NAB’s ongoing commitment to fostering civic engagement, as reflected by the recent launch of NAB’s Election Preparedness Initiative. Both initiatives underscore NAB’s dedication to equipping broadcasters with tools to support informed and active voter participation.
In line with this commitment, NAB also offers an Election Toolkit, which provides broadcasters with comprehensive resources to engage and educate voters.
On America's Stories, read about how local stations serve as key resources for voter information.
