In 46 years as a play-by-play announcer, host, reporter, writer and anchor, Bob Carpenter has been one of the nation’s busiest sportscasters, from local radio and TV to regional sports and to the national stage on USA Network and ESPN. He has called thousands of sporting events in more than a dozen sports at every level.
2023 will mark Bob’s 18th year as TV voice of the Washington Nationals and his 40th season as a major league baseball announcer, including stops in the TV booths of ESPN, the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, New York Mets and Minnesota Twins.
Carpenter won 2 Emmys for Cardinals baseball, and was nominated for 4 others in St. Louis, New York and Washington. In 17 years with ESPN, he was a mainstay of their college basketball, football and major league baseball coverage, announcing numerous NCAA Tournaments and Bowl Games. Bob’s work with USA in the ‘80s included college football and basketball, boxing, hosting the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and Masters Golf, as well as numerous PGA Tour events.
Carpenter graduated from McBride High School in his native St. Louis and earned a degree with honors from UMKC in 1975. Bob and his wife Debbie have been married 43 years and have 2 daughters, Katie and Allison. Allison and her husband Ryan have two sons, James and Benjamin. For 15 years, the Carpenters hosted the Operation Hope Golf Tournament in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, raising over $550,000 for charity. Bob has lent his voice and talent to numerous charities on the local, state, regional and national levels. In 2017, Carpenter was inducted into the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
