Harry Caray

BASEBALL LOVER

Harry Caray isn’t just a sportscaster, he’s the fan in the seat next to you, the guy who punches you in the ribs and yells “holy cow!” every time the home team hits a long ball. Since his first major league broadcast in 1945, Caray took his listeners out to the ballgame.

Caray’s love for baseball started young. Growing up in St. Louis, Caray would go watch the Cardinals whenever he saved up the money. He also played. Starting in his school days, he progressed to semi-pro, playing for leagues in Missouri and Illinois on weekends.

He became a sportscaster almost by chance. After being rejected by the majors, on an impulse Caray sent a letter to KMOX claiming to call the game better than their regular announcer though he had no radio experience.

His genuine love for the game permeated his calls. It’s why, regardless of the stadium or the team, whether in St. Louis, Oakland or Chicago, he drew a league of loving fans. His enthusiasm was infectious. Before you knew it, you were thinking about a hot dog, wondering what that breeze will do to our left-handed hitters and having a great time.
