NAB
CRYSTAL RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO WUSL-FM
LAS
VEGAS - WUSL-FM Philadelphia today was awarded the National Association
of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio
Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round
commitment to community service.
NAB selected 10 winners from a pool of 50 finalists. Recipients were recognized
at today's NAB Radio Luncheon during NAB2007.
WUSL-FM provided this description of its accomplishments in 2006:
"WUSL-FM continued its 24 year award-winning tradition as the heart
of our community. When Philadelphia's murder rate threatened to break
a record, WUSL partnered with the Philadelphia School District for 'Safe
Night Philadelphia,' promoting safe teen activities in 300 locations and
a 'Children's March' that drew thousands. 'Peace on the Street Jams' brought
national artists and resources to seven at-risk neighborhoods. WUSL stopped
the music three times during its highest rated hour to host live call-ins
on issues like 'no snitching.' WUSL organized and broadcast a town meeting
with the Police Commissioner, the School District and the Mayor's office
and 100 community activists. Community service is our passion and WUSL
also addressed other concerns by sponsoring or co-sponsoring fund-raisers
that raised $1.5 million, a voter registration drive netting 5,000 new
voters, visiting seven schools for its 'No Excuses' stay in school tour,
filling a school bus with two tons of 'Tools for Schools,' hosting a Thanksgiving
dinner for 3,000 homeless, and delivering holiday pies to over 300 families
who lost loved ones to violence. WUSL-FM donated over $4 million in air
time, over 250 appearances valued at $850,000 and web support valued at
$675,000. WUSL is the community leader."
