Important Advice for Staying On the Air During Emergencies

Broadcasters play a unique role during emergencies. Radio and television stations deliver critical, often life-saving information to the American public, and with another hurricane season rapidly approaching, it is important that broadcasters maintain their ability to stay on the air when severe weather, natural disasters and other emergencies strike. NAB wants to remind you that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) administers a program that can help: the Disaster Information Reporting System, or DIRS. Signing up for DIRS is voluntary, simple and a convenient way to inform the FCC, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other government agencies about your operational status during a disaster. Registering with DIRS can also facilitate help from the FCC or FEMA to obtain fuel, a generator or other vital supplies during an emergency. Stations may sign up or check their status in DIRS on the FCC’s website. For more information, please see this video of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai explaining the benefits of registering in the DIRS system.
