As a student, I loved the magic school bus. The teacher wheeling in the TV cart was always such a treat. As someone who has always wanted to be a teacher, Ms. Frizzle was an icon! I wanted to be her, and have her wardrobe. Her love of all things science and discovery make the world of inquiry exciting.
I am now a science teacher myself, and I recently asked my students if there were any Magic School Bus fans, and every single hand shot up. For a show that was popular when I was a kid, it has really stood the test of time. I asked my students what the best part of the show is, and the the resounding answer is Ms. Frizzle. They of course remember specific episodes like when they shrink down and go into the cell, or specific characters, Arnold and Carlos were popular.
However, it is Ms. Frizzle that makes the show great. She is the teacher we all want to have and be. She lets the students (and viewers) discover the natural world on their own. Science is always evolving but her approach to learning and discovery is timeless. As is the show itself.
