For me, and many others, The NAB Advance Parties I organised and hosted epitomised the excitement and thrill of being involved in a vibrant, innovative and original industry. Sponsored by our clients, one of the (very basic) invitations is a real trip down memory lane...
Everyone turned up. It was a fabulous mix of customers, press, analysts, manufacturers, dealers, etc. - if you were involved in the broadcast industry and attending NAB, you were there. Or wanted to be! Competitors mixed and celebrated the fact that we were together in the desert. It was fun, loud and a brilliant way to start the exhibition.
The Beach is no longer even there. It was opposite the LVCC and a perfect location. We took over the whole venue and filled it – over filled it actually – year after year. There are pictures, videos, write-ups and NAB HD TV (another memory) even covered it one year. Those were the days of the back page of Hardware magazine being full of pictures of people having fun - I wish I could find one of those now. Someone must have one? I do have the NAB TV video though...
Our industry is about people. The technology invented and constantly updated is vital and thrilling, but people buy from people. And as an industry, broadcast is special. It’s family – dysfunctional at times – but there for you. My entire career has been in the broadcast industry, and I’ve been going to NAB since 1991.
