FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to Speak During 2010 NAB Show

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski, will deliver a keynote speech during the 2010 NAB Show in Las Vegas, show organizers announced today. Genachowski's remarks will be made on Tuesday, April 13 at 9 a.m. "We are delighted that Chairman Genachowski will be joining us at this year's NAB Show," said NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith. "As the world's largest showcase of technologies from across the communications ecosystem, we're pleased to present Chairman Genachowski with a high-profile platform to share his views on communications policy and the future of free and local broadcasting."

New Closed Captioning Contact Requirements in Effect March 22
As we reported last month, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently initiated new closed captioning requirements for TV stations. In addition to the new complaint process that started on February 19, stations will be required, starting March 22, to post updated and accurate closed captioning complain contact information on their Web site, and in some cases, in telephone listings.

NAB Files Comments In Support of National EAS Test
NAB filed comments in response to the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding a review of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). NAB supports the FCC's proposal for national, annual testing of EAS, and offered several recommendations to improve the value of the proposed exercises.

Political Advertising Tip
Reminder to stations that are outside the political windows for lowest unit charge (45 days before a primary, 60 days before a general election or runoff): stations may not charge premium rates to candidates or their authorized committees. Section 315(b)(2) of the Communications Act expressly states that that charges made for the use of a station by a candidate outside the statutory period "shall not exceed the charges made for comparable use of such station by other users thereof." NABEF Fellowships for NAB Executive Development Seminar - Application Deadline is April 30
The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) will award eight fellowships to people of color and women in broadcasting to attend the NAB Executive Development Seminar held July 26-29 at NAB headquarters in Washington, D.C. The seminar is designed to increase managerial effectiveness and provide the additional skills needed for career advancement.

The NAB Show has announced the participants in a Content Theater session titled "Hubble 3D: Filmmaking in Outer Space with IMAX Technology." The panelists will be Toni Myers, director and producer of "Hubble 3D"; David Keighley, executive vice president, IMAX; Brian Bonnick, executive vice president of technology, IMAX; and Larry O'Reilly, executive vice president of theatre development, IMAX.
