NAB
CRYSTAL RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO WLEN-FM
LAS
VEGAS -- WLEN-FM Adrian, Mich. today was awarded the National Association
of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio
Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round
commitment to community service.
Ten winners were chosen among 50
finalists. Recipients were recognized at today's NAB Show Radio Luncheon.
WLEN-FM
provided this description of its accomplishments in 2009:
In 2009, Michigan had the highest unemployment in the country. Our economy
crashed. We knew the community need would be greater than ever. This year
alone, we helped raise more than $2 million dollars in community giving.
We may be small but we're mighty. A 3,000-watt standalone FM in a community
of 23,000 people, we touched more than 100 organizations, from the Salvation
Army to the Boys and Girls Club, to local efforts assisting the homeless
and unemployed and those in home foreclosure. We began Hometown Hope,
a nonprofit marketing grant program. Each month we designed and donated
a $3,500 marketing plan to a different nonprofit recipient. We organized
WLEN fundraising events, supported others' events and our staff of 17
donated more than 2,000 volunteer hours. WLEN broadcast 54,734 PSAs, as
well as more than 400 hours of community affairs programming. We kept
our community safe during storms and power outages and kept public officials
accountable. Dorothy said "there's no place like home," and
there are no truer words. We live it, feel it, breathe it every day. We
will continue to strengthen our local community and economy by helping
people and organizations help themselves and help each other.
